Now there's another option for people with cognitive impairments like Alzheimer's. Complete Geriatric Care's ElderHomes are small, residential homes for eight to ten elders living with dementia. The focus of each home is not the illness, but activation and recreation. The activation is comprehensive and tailored to the individual resident, based on his or her lifetime experiences and interests. If one resident has always enjoyed cooking, and another has spent most of her life in the garden, the specially trained staff will design individual programs to reflect these interests.

The homes are fully integrated with the community, with visits to local shops, restaurants and parks, and deep involvement with residents' families.

Focusing on what the person can do

The Complete Geriatric Care's ElderHomes are based on a non-medical model first applied in the United States at Wesley Hall, within the University of Michigan. This model stresses a residential, home-like atmosphere rather than an institutional one. Complete Geriatric Care makes minor modifications to the home to allow for changes in the residents' abilities and perceptions, and the resident's families furnish the bedrooms with familiar personal articles. Although it is a non-medical model, each home has medical supervision and is linked with local hospitals in case of emergency.

The future of ElderHomes

Complete Geriatric Care has acted as consultant in establishing four ElderHomes in the Greater Toronto area since 1991. In each case our advisors have assisted in the selection and design of the project, implementation of programs for recreation and activation, staff selection and training, marketing and overall operations of the home.
