connecting people who help older people

Our networking challenge

e at the Elderconnection defy any publisher, distributor or seller of business books to show us one about surviving on your own in the business world that doesn’t have a chapter on networking. We issue this challenge confident in the fact that these days, “networking” is virtually synonomous with “surviving on your own in the business world”.

And by “on your own” we don’t mean only the self-employed. In 1999 and beyond, we’re ALL on our own — shopowners, dentists, real estate agents, bank vice-presidents, clergy, nurses, and Members of Parliament. Some of these people have always needed a well-stocked network of contacts; but now, the rest of us do too. The old employment contract has been torn up, and whether we accept it or not, we’re all in business for ourselves, or soon will be. A lifetime of loyalty in exchange for lifetime security is a museum piece. That model served us well while it was needed, but the time has arrived for bold new models for career success.

This is the main reason we (Complete Geriatric Care) began the Elderconnection in June of 1994. As gerontological professionals of all different disciplines, our consultants simply couldn’t find a business networking vehicle to suit our needs. There are professional groups for the individual disciplines of nursing, social work, and so on; but they only allow you meet people of the same profession. At the other extreme, there are groups like the Canada Club and the Board of Trade that are completely open; you can make contacts from all possible fields. However, although both types of society are necessary and important, for business networking in the field of aging we found the professional groups too narrow, and the open groups too broad, with no specific agenda. We wanted a group where we would meet professionals from all different backgrounds but who shared the common bond of helping seniors in some way. So we created our own.
