Long Term Care Insurance:

Is it for everyone?

contributed by Sharon Clavir, Clavir Insurance

Mhe answer is yes; unless you have unlimited funds, plan to die young and in good health or expect your children to take care of you.

Years ago, our health care system provided up to seven hours of Home Care a day.  Now, you may get two hours, twice a week if you are lucky.  Clearly, our health care system cannot provide the services we need as we get older and our health deteriorates.

Recently, a dear friend of mine called.  Her husband had been ill for a long time.  Their insurance did not provide either home or respite care.  The help provided by Home Care did not give her time for anything except going to the market or drugstore.  My friend was worried that she would run out of money, paying for extra care.  Sadly, her husband died three weeks later and she did not have to dip into their life savings.

Not long after her husband's death, my friend called me and took out Long Term Care Insurance for herself.  Two months ago she required surgery and needed Long Term Care at home.  Thankfully, she had the proper coverage and it gave her all the help she needed for six weeks.

Long Term Care Insurance will provide assistance for such things as Home Health Care, Long Term Care facilities and a Care Giver in a Retirement Home.  This type of insurance is becoming extremely popular in Canada.

As people who work with an aging population, we see the need for Long Term Care Insurance.  Most of us would like to remain in our own home if we are sick.  With Long Term Care Insurance it is possible.

Many years ago I had 3 back operations and my Group Insurance did not include a Home Care Giver.  I could have gone to a Nursing Home, but I wanted to be home with my children.  I had no choice but to pay for a care giver out of my own pocket.  Most people are not that lucky.

Think now, about Long Term Care Insurance!  You have choices.  You can go to a nursing home or stay at home with in home help.  You can pay premiums on Long Term Care Insurance now or put it off and risk depleting your Retirement Funds and your estate later.
